Conversion: Denied
In all the time I spent studying to convert to Orthodox Judaism, nothing about vaccines ever came up in conversation.
However, on account of a recent measles outbreak, every school has made a rule that children who are unvaccinated may not go to yeshiva any more.
My conversion is on account of a mistake in earlier life. Our family converted Conservative, and I have been living as a religious Jew for all of my adult life. But now we want to dot our "i"s and cross the "t"s as they say.
Why don't I vaccinate? Because of an injury I had, from a vaccine, when I was in college.
Anyway, the rabbi asked me if I was committed to sending my kids to Jewish day school? Of course I am! But my kids are currently not welcome in school.
Stupidly, I noted that we'd love to send our kids to school. But they are denied access on account of our stance.
Conversion status: Denied.
This is Orthodox Judaism? Making up new rules as we go along? I'm not sure I want in any more.
Since when is a stance on vaccination grounds for being allowed in or allowed out of the Jewish community?
